Michael Weatherly sends NCIS fans into meltdown with Tony DiNozzo return tease
Michael Weatherly, formerly better known as NCIS Agent Tony DiNozzo, has caused a frenzy amongst the show’s fans by confirming his return to work after the conclusion of his latest series.
Long-time NCIS star Michael Weatherly stepped down from his role as Agent DiNozzo in 2016 before taking on another iconic CBS drama, Bull, for several years. Now his term as Dr Jason Bull has come to an end, fans of his wise-cracking special agent have been pleading with the star to make a triumphant comeback, and Michael’s latest posts on Twitter seem to be hinting this could happen much sooner than expected.
NCIS fans were ecstatic when former DiNozzo star Michael confirmed he has started to line up more projects this week.
He took to Twitter on Thursday to reveal he had spent some time in Los Angeles, where the majority of the NCIS franchise is filmed.
Michael shared a snap of himself back in New York and promised his followers some exciting updates were on the horizon.
“After a whirlwind few days in LA I’m back in NYC,” he shared.

NCIS: Will DiNozzo ever reunite with Ziva David?
“Happy to report that lots of interesting things are happening on the work front… stay tuned!”
In the accompanying picture, Michael is holding a red sign which reads ‘Sensitive surface, use caution’, which could be a hint towards his next role.
Many of his fans were quick to assume the forthcoming updates could be confirmation of DiNozzo’s return to NCIS.
He may also be setting course for a reunion with Agent Ziva David (played by Cote de Pablo), who made a brief return in seasons 16 and 17.
NCIS: Is Michael Weatherly planning a DiNozzo comeback?
As the series has its home in LA, it’s very possible he has been meeting with the show’s producers to discuss another stint as the beloved agent in the near future.
@AussieFan13 replied: “That is the best news, it all sounds very intriguing. Does it mean you might be dashing to the lift again, Special Agent Dinozzo?”
@donutsdebsdibs asked: “Anything connected to one ‘Very special agent’….?”
“Oh, yay!!” Sherri Keefer exclaimed. “This would be an amazing Christmas gift to we fans, Michael!! LA!!! My mind is spinning with NCIS thoughts!!”
While Tim Miller mused: “Your hair is looking very…DiNozzo like..”
“Michael, you look wonderful! We are excited with your news,” Carol Mitchell commented.
“I hope some, if not all, of your ‘interesting things’ will have our beautiful Cote de Pablo by your side.”
And Davey Hart said: “That ‘work front’ better be a Tony and Ziva reunion/wedding episode. Come on man, we all need closure.” (sic)
In a previous post, Michael also confirmed he was hoping to return for “another round” on the NCIS team for the next stage of his career.
At the end of November, he tweeted: “So at sushi lunch the server asked ‘what’s next, Michael?’ I said a podcast and maybe an indie movie, another round of DiNozzo at some point.
“She stared at me and said, ‘no-sorry – what’s your next sushi dish?’. Humbled, I of course asked for jalapeño hamachi. And the check.”
Although DiNozzo’s comeback is getting more and more likely by the day, it’s still unclear whether Michael would be returning permanently as part of the main cast or just in a guest star capacity.
NCIS season 20 continues Monday, January 2 on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
