NCIS’ Mark Harmon offers rare insight into family life as he discusses wife and sons

Before stepping away from his NCIS role as the beloved agent Gibbs, Mark Harmon opened up about his wife and two sons – and how they also joined stints on the CBS drama.
After almost 20 years as the fan-favourite Jethro Gibbs, Mark Harmon decided to leave NCIS in season 19. Although he usually keeps his personal life private, the actor beamed with pride as he spoke on his son’s cameo in the long-running CBS drama.
Viewers were first introduced to Gibbs during the pilot episode of NCIS which aired in 2003.

Since then the character remained a fundamental part of the procedural drama and appeared in every episode, until his exit in 2021.

While the actor’s departure devastated fans, viewers got a glimpse of his personal life as both his son, Sean Harmon and wife Pam Dawber appeared on the show.

During an interview, the actor spoke with joy about his son’s cameo on NCIS to star in his flashback episodes.

Mark also detailed how proud Pam was and shared: “More than anything, she’s a mom, and there’s a pride there involved in that.”

Speaking about Sean, he explained: “Separate from anything as an actor, you hopefully take pride in who people are individually away from any camera just as people, as citizens.

“And both our boys have done well and hopefully made smart choices and are doing well daily.

“Day by day, we have a lot of reasons to be proud of both of them.

“This is part of that,” Mark added to Entertainment Weekly.

After first meeting in the early ’80s, Mark and actress Pam tied the know in 1987 with an intimate ceremony, which means they have been married for 36 years.

The couple then welcomed their sons Sean and Ty Harmon, both of whom have embarked on careers in Hollywood.

While Sean appears on screen, Ty prefers to be behind the cameras as a screenwriter.
Throughout Mark’s time on NCIS, Sean appeared in several episodes starring as the younger version of his father during flashback episodes, since 2008.

To date, Sean has guest-starred in seven episodes, with the most recent one being the 2020 episode, Everything Starts Somewhere.

This was particularly significant for viewers as it reflected on how Gibbs and Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard (David McCallum) became involved in their first case together.

Pam also starred in seven episodes of NCIS, where she played investigative journalist, Marcie Warren in 2021.
Throughout the years, other NCIS actors have also had their real-life children on show including McGee star Sean Murray’s child Cat Ryan Murray.

After their season 19 cameo as a teenage suspect, the actor praised his child and stated: “She was a total pro. I’m like, I wish I was as cool as she is because she handled it so well.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, an emotional Sean added: “I’m so proud. It’s hard to… I’ll get choked up.

“I will always have a piece of film or digital video of my daughter and I both doing what we love together on screen.

“So that’s something that will always be there, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”

NCIS season 20 continues Monday on CBS in the USA and Wednesday on Disney+ in the UK.
